Happy Tales - LACY & MORGAN
“I adopted two “accident-prone” retired racing greyhound sisters, Lacy and Morgan, the day after Christmas 2005.
On April 19, 2008, Lacy broke her leg in our backyard. Her bone was
shattered. It was a devastating injury. She had surgery to repair her leg and from the beginning her body wanted to reject the metal plate that needed to stay in place until the bone healed. The wound wouldn’t stay closed. After many months (about 7 months!!) the bone did finally heal and the plate was removed but Lacy lost the ability to bend her foot and therefore the ability to walk on that leg. It was ‘stuck’ in the position that it had been casted with toes pointed down. The doctor suggested that we start rehabilitation with Mary Kay.
We really did the best we could at rehabilitation but since Lacy’s leg had been fixed in one position for so many months, we made limited progress on getting her foot back to ‘normal’. We did make enough progress though to allow Mary Kay to suggest that Lacy wear a custom-made, very special leg brace giving her the ability to walk again rather than hopping on three legs all the time. That brace gave Lacy a much better quality of life. It was so wonderful for us to actually see her walk again.
We continued physical therapy with Mary Kay for the rest of Lacy’s life and although Lacy was always quite the drama queen, she did benefit greatly from those sessions. When she “walked” around our backyard, her abilities were back-to-normal to everyone’s delight. Thanks to Mary Kay, Lacy’s quality of life was much improved and my trust in Mary Kay gave me the assurance that Lacy was getting the best of care.”
LACY - “Able to walk again!!”
(severely fractured leg, custom brace)
MORGAN - “Tiara-wearing princess!!”
(patellar tendon, toe injuries)
“On New Years Eve, 2009, Morgan slipped while coming into the house and injured her patellar tendon. If she had still been racing, this certainly would have been a career-ending injury. Morgan began seeing Mary Kay for this injury in January 2010 and is still benefitting from Mary Kay’s healing techniques. Since then, Morgan has suffered several accidental toe injuries, one requiring an amputation, which, unfortunately, happens in greyhounds. Morgan is 12-years old now and is seeing Mary Kay as needed, usually once every other week. She is not on any daily pain medications and can walk for a mile or more at her favorite park with her new adopted greyhound friend, Molly. Mary Kay’s stretching massages and strength exercises have enabled Morgan to recover from her injury and have greatly enhanced her senior years as well as allowing Morgan to retain her “princess” status!! (She wears her ‘tiara’ necklace so that everyone knows!) Mary Kay has positively contributed to all of our lives through her expertise and compassion. I very highly recommend Mary Kay.”
